Abstract

Objectives: Our primary goal is to explore the Medication Therapy Management policy in the context of the Saudi Arabian healthcare system, a new and urgent initiative. This policy, which has the potential to significantly impact patient care and adherence to drug therapy, is of the utmost importance for our research and discussion. Methods: It was a narrative review of pharmacy research. Literature was searched in databases, including PubMed, Medline and Google Scholar, about specific research policies and procedures in pharmacy practice. The search period is from the 1960s until October 2021. The term is in English and includes narrative review, systemic review, Meta-analysis and guidelines. All hospital or community pharmacy services are included in a search term. Besides, the national and international guidelines of general research in hospital practice are also included. The pharmacy research committee, which consisted of various expert members, including clinical pharmacists, drug information pharmacists and clinical research specialists, played a crucial role in formulating the Medication Therapy Management policy guidelines. The guidelines of the policy draft by one member and the second member were reviewed and corrected. The third revision was by the research specialist. The topic emphasizes the Medication Therapy Management policy and procedures. Results: The Medication Therapy Management policy is a comprehensive initiative encompassing Patient assessment, Medication Therapy Review, medication treatment plan intervention, documentation of drug therapy care, verbal and written education and medication training for patients, Monitoring and evaluating patient clinical and economics and Medication Therapy Management with health insurance. This comprehensive approach reassures us of its potential effectiveness. Conclusion: The Medication Therapy Management policy at community pharmacy is a new initiative and a part of the pharmaceutical care performance. This policy, which enhances pharmacist’s skills in drug therapy practice, is designed to improve patient care and adherence to drug therapy. It also aims to prevent drug-related problems and avoid unnecessary economic burdens on the public and healthcare organizations. Therefore, the Medication Therapy Management policy at community pharmacies is highly recommended in Saudi Arabia, as it includes various components such as patient assessment, medication therapy review, the intervention of medication treatment plan, documentation of drug therapy care, verbal and written education and medication training for patients, monitoring and evaluating patient clinical and economics and medication therapy management with health insurance.
